Guiding & Local Expertise

Professional guiding and local expertise for agencies, groups, photographers, and media teams working across Iceland.

Marco works as a professional guide and local expert for travel agencies, tour operators, organized groups, photographers, and media teams working in Iceland. His role is to accompany clients in the field, provide practical knowledge of the places they are visiting, and help them understand how Iceland’s landscapes, weather, natural phenomena, and changing conditions affect the experience on the ground.

Based in Iceland since 2018, he has spent years working across the country as a guide, visual journalist, photographer, and field professional. That combination gives him practical, first-hand knowledge of locations, particularly in volcanic areas, remote landscapes, and places where weather, road conditions, or environmental restrictions can change quickly.

Assignments can range from guiding an agency’s group for part of an itinerary to working as a local expert alongside photographers, journalists, documentary crews, or other professional teams that need direct knowledge of Iceland while they are in the field.

Who this is for

Travel agencies, tour operators and DMCs

Guiding and local-expert support for organized itineraries operated by agencies or tour operators, from small specialist groups to larger departures requiring an experienced guide in Iceland.

Media and documentary teams

Local-expert support for journalists, filmmakers, and production teams that already have their own production structure but need someone who knows the country and can provide context on locations and conditions in the field.

Photography groups and professional photographers

Field guiding for photographers and photography groups who need local knowledge of locations, timing, conditions, terrain, and the practical realities of working outdoors in Iceland.

Specialist and professional groups

Guiding for organizations, institutions, and other groups that need deeper local knowledge of Iceland’s landscapes, volcanic environments, natural phenomena, and changing field conditions.

What the role can include

  • Professional guiding: Accompanying groups and professional clients throughout an itinerary, providing clear information, context, and practical guidance during the day.
  • Local and field knowledge: First-hand familiarity with Icelandic regions, routes, landscapes, seasonal conditions, and the practical differences between locations that may appear similar when viewed only on a map.
  • Volcanic and natural environments: Field-based interpretation of volcanic landscapes, geothermal areas, glaciers, weather, and other natural phenomena, informed by years of working regularly in these environments.
  • Support for photographers and visual teams: Practical guidance around location timing, light, terrain, weather, and changing conditions for photographers and visual professionals working in the field.
  • Flexible professional collaboration: Working within an itinerary or project established by an agency, operator, group leader, or professional team, including guide-only or driver-guide assignments where operationally appropriate.

Field knowledge built over time

Local knowledge becomes more useful when it comes from repeated experience rather than occasional visits. Marco has worked throughout Iceland in different seasons and conditions, returning regularly to the same regions for guiding, journalism, photography, and field assignments.

That continuity is particularly valuable in places where conditions change rapidly. Volcanic areas on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the Highlands, glacier regions, mountain roads, and exposed coastal areas can behave very differently according to season, weather, closures, or ongoing natural activity. Understanding those differences helps a group make better use of the time available without treating every day as a fixed itinerary that must be followed regardless of conditions.

The same field experience also informs how Marco explains the landscape. Rather than separating a location from what is happening around it, he can place it within the broader context of Iceland’s geography, volcanic activity, weather, environment, and the way people live and work in these areas.

Guiding and driving

The exact role depends on the size of the group and the transport arrangement. Marco holds a category D driving licence and, where operationally appropriate and within the relevant licensed operator framework, can work as a driver-guide for groups of up to 19 people.

For larger groups travelling by coach, guiding and driving are separate roles. Marco can work as the group’s guide or local expert while a dedicated professional driver operates the vehicle.

Transport, tour operation, accommodation, and other travel services remain the responsibility of the client’s operator or an appropriately licensed partner.

Working with agencies and professional teams

Marco can work within an itinerary or project developed by an agency, tour operator, DMC, group leader, or professional team, adapting his role to the structure already in place. This may mean guiding a complete itinerary, joining only for a particular region or subject, or providing local expertise for part of a wider program.

Marco works within the structure set by the organization responsible for the trip or project, rather than replacing it. His role can therefore be added to an existing program without turning it into a separate consumer tour product.

Productions that also require location research, scouting, permits, logistics, or broader operational coordination can use Marco’s Production Support services.

Individual travellers looking for a privately organized experience can instead explore Private & Custom Tours, while photographers interested in Marco’s own scheduled or custom photographic experiences can visit Photo Tours & Workshops.
