Public Speaking & Talks

Talks and presentations on volcanoes, visual journalism, and field storytelling.

Marco gives talks and public lectures on volcanic activity, visual journalism, and field storytelling, drawing on firsthand work in Iceland, Italy, and other active volcanic regions. Using photographs, video, maps, and examples from real assignments, he explains how rapidly changing natural events are documented and communicated, and how visual choices influence the way audiences understand them.

Sessions can focus on a particular eruption or assignment, a longer project developed over several years, or broader questions around visual journalism, photography, volcanic environments, and communicating complex events accurately. The content and level of detail can be adapted to the audience and setting.

Stories from the field

Marco’s talks bring together direct experience from volcanic environments with the visual and editorial decisions involved in documenting them.

  • Volcanic activity and field observation in Iceland and Italy
  • Visual journalism and the responsibility of explaining complex events without exaggeration
  • Photography and cinematography in demanding environments
  • Iceland’s geology, light, natural processes, and changing landscapes
  • How photographs and footage become part of a wider story

Photographs, video clips, maps, and other visual material are used throughout the presentations to connect events on the ground with the way they are observed, documented, and ultimately presented to an audience.

Talk formats

Talks can be delivered in person or online, in English or Italian, and adapted to the setting and time available.

  • Conference talks and lectures of around 30 to 60 minutes
  • Panel discussions and Q&A sessions
  • Educational workshops for schools or universities
  • Festival and museum talks
  • Media interviews and podcast conversations

Sessions can range from an accessible introduction for a general audience to more focused discussions for photography, journalism, or geoscience groups.

Speaking and media background

Marco’s public speaking experience includes lectures at the University of Catania’s Department of Geology, conference appearances in Sicily, interviews for BBC, and television segments for RAI programs including Uno Mattina and Kalipé – A passo d’uomo. He has also appeared in documentaries on volcanic activity, including the Focus documentary Il respiro della terra – Speciale Islanda.

These experiences have involved communicating with scientists, journalists, students, television audiences, and the wider public, using photographs, footage, and firsthand accounts to make complex events accessible without oversimplifying them.

Alongside scheduled talks and presentations, Marco is available for live field reporting, interviews, and broadcast commentary on volcanic and environmental events.

He has contributed to live television and media coverage from volcanic areas, providing context and firsthand observations supported by images and footage from the location. Live segments and remote links can be conducted in English or Italian and coordinated with newsroom or broadcast requirements.
